Research
Within Utrecht University much research is done in the field of (Applied) Data Science, often together with companies and institutions outside the university. On this page you will find some examples of projects carried out within the focus area.
- ASReview ASReview uses state-of-the-art active learning techniques to solve one of the most interesting challenges in screening large amounts of text: there’s not enough time to read everything! Learn more about the free and open source software for systematic reviewing: ASReview LAB.
- Digital Data Donation Infrastructure The Digital Data Donation Infrastructure (D3I) will enable individuals to donate their digital trace data to academic research in a secure, transparent, and privacy-protecting manner. This unlocks a treasure trove for research in the Social Sciences and the Humanities.
- Comparing methods of detecting and segmenting unruptured intracranial aneurysms on TOF-MRAS The Aneurysm Detection and segMentation (ADAM) challenge was organised in which methods for automatic aneurysm detection and segmentation were developed and submitted to be evaluated on a diverse clinical Time of Flight Magnetic Resonance Angiographs (TOF-MRA) dataset.
- Magic Monster: motivating children to do home-based hand therapy with self-adaptive play complexity Research on how to design smart toys with self-adaptive play complexity to motivate children with cerebral palsy (CP) to continue hand therapy at home.
- ADS grant winners The ADS grant calls foster the application of data science techniques in research areas where they are not yet applied and to accelerate the development of data science techniques by working in an interdisciplinary way. See examples of past successful calls.
- How machine learning helped ecologist Joeri Zwerts Sustainable, or responsible, forest industry is often recognized by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label. Ecologist Joeri Zwerts investigates whether FSC certification actually have a positive effect on the fauna in the forests concerned.
- How datascience can help wildlife Joeri Zwerts studies whether FSC-certified forestry practices are helping to save endangered species in the countries of Congo, Gabon and Cameroon.
- Engaged research and teaching respond to urgency and needs in different societal sectors Mirko Schäfer's research focuses on responsible data practices and AI, and on the analysis of public debates on social media. An interview.
- Predicting and preventing Covid-19 How is it that some covid-19 patients are affected much worse than others? Can we predict beforehand which of them will develop critical symptoms. Utrecht researcher Roel Vermeulen is one of the collaborating partners in the consortium that received a grant of 1 million euros.
- Experts COVID-19 related research An overview of researchers at the UU and the UMCU who are willing to commit their expertise in COVID-19 related research.
