Research and education animal experiments

Are you about to start or have you recently started conducting animal experiments in research or education in Utrecht?

Register with the AWB and getting started meeting

If so, please register with the AWB and sign up for the 'Getting started with animal experiments' meeting. During this meeting, we will explain how we work here and what you need to bear in mind in order to do your job properly.

To let you know what we and others expect from you in your current position, we have described the tasks and responsibilities in a policy document. The starting point for animal research in Utrecht is the recognition that animals have intrinsic value. This means that animals have value in themselves, regardless of their usefulness or value to humans. Everyone involved in animal experiments must therefore respect the interests of the animals. In concrete terms, this leads, for example, to extra attention being paid to their welfare. Openness about methods, data and results is a prerequisite for this, as it can lead to more reliable, efficient and relevant research in which fewer laboratory animals are used.
