Culture of Care: everyone's responsibility

Anyone who conducts animal experiments is legally required to apply for a licence and to undergo the appropriate training and education. But they are also required to work towards a Culture of Care (CoC).

There are all kinds of definitions of Culture of Care. At the Utrecht Animal Welfare Authority, we understand it to mean: a culture of care for animals and people. A culture in which all those involved take responsibility for animal welfare, scientific integrity and respect for legal boundaries. Openness, trust and safety are key concepts in this regard.

We apply the legal frameworks and codes of conduct as minimum requirements, but we strive for animal welfare and quality that go beyond that, and a culture in which the professionalism of employees is recognised and they are proud of what they do. This way of working has been shown to increase job satisfaction. You can read more about this in our internal policy.

On these pages, you will find inspiring stories and practical tools to help you promote the CoC in your department or within your research. If you have any questions or cannot find what you are looking for, please contact us.
