I want to adopt

We regularly have laboratory animals available for adoption. These are usually rats, but sometimes also mice, chickens or other animal species. 

How to register as an adopter?

If you would like to register as an adopter, please email  adoptie.ivd@uu.nl.

Please include the following information:

• Why you want to adopt laboratory animals
• Whether you want females or males, or if you have no preference
• Whether you want two, three, four or more animals
• How you will house them
• Whether you have previously had animals of the desired species

We will put you on a list and notify you when animals that match your requirements become available.

Adoption of rats

Most rats become available after behavioural testing (their behaviour is observed) or they are left over from breeding. You can adopt both females and males, always in groups of the same sex. Sometimes they have had an injection or had blood taken, but they have never been in much pain (we call this ‘minor discomfort’). All rats are well socialised and their health has been checked.
