Animal donor codicil
One way to reduce the use of laboratory animals is the Animal Donor Codicil. This means that, as a pet owner, you can make the body of a deceased pet available to Utrecht University for educational purposes via your vet.
Using a deceased pet ensures that no animals need to be specially bred and killed. The animal donor codicil is an initiative of the Utrecht Animal Welfare Body, the faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Stichting Proefdiervrij.
Practising skills
The body of the deceased pet is used in the education of trainee vets under the supervision of expert staff at Utrecht University. This gives them a better understanding of the anatomy of various animal species and breeds, and allows them to practise their skills. The animals help students to become proficient in their profession. This enables them to better treat other sick or injured pets later on as vets.
Stichting Proefdiervrij
Through its collaboration on the Animal Donor Codicil, Stichting Proefdiervrij aims to reduce the use of laboratory animals in education. Owners can donate their deceased pets free of charge through affiliated veterinary practices. Ask your own vet about the possibilities or contact dierdonorcodicil@uu.nl
