About the Animal Welfare Body Utrecht

The Animal Welfare Body Utrecht is an authority of Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht. We advise on and monitor research and education involving animals. We also advise on the 3Rs: replacement, reduction and refinement.

Our tasks relate to animal welfare, alternatives, procedures, registration, supervision and communication with government agencies, among other things. These tasks are largely based on the Animal Experiments Act. The 3Rs Centre Utrecht is part of the Animal Welfare Body Utrecht.

Our mission

Our mission is to replace and reduce animal testing in education and research at Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht as much as possible. Where this is not possible, we monitor the welfare of the laboratory animals (refinement). In doing so, we encourage a culture of care for both humans and animals as much as possible.
