Panels and banners

The book provides a systematical discussion of processional panels and banners from the Italian region of the Marches from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Schmidt studies a category of painting from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and their use and function. More specifically, the book discusses the various typologies, the iconography and the patronage, the handling of the objects during processions and other rituals, and their storage. Finally, the differences between the two main supports of the objects, panel and canvas, are taken into consideration. Appended is a summary catalogue of the more than fifty objects that survived.

The Marches

Although processional panels and banners were less prestigious than the better known altar pieces of the period, they were not a ‘minor’ category: some were made in the workshops of some of the greatest artists of their time, including Gentile da Fabriano, Luca Signorelli, Perugino, Raphael and Titian. Not all these artists came from the region of the Marches itself, but what makes the region special is how many objects survived, compared to other regions in Italy, and even Europe.
