New educational concept: the synergy between health care, research and bachelor's education

A visit of an undiagnosed patient in the lecture hall; in biomedical sciences at the UMC Utrecht it happens. With this new educational concept, the synergy between health care, research and bachelor's education is being worked on. With it, students learn and patients are helped.

The education took place in the recently opened Bachelor Research Hub, a place where students, clinicians, researchers and doctors come together to do both extra- and intra-curricular research. The new educational concept led to a publication in Nature Biotechnology and is now being put into practice (in Dutch). The lab is headed by Niels Bovenschen.

Author of this publication are student Rijkent Drost, Wim Dictus, Berent Prakken and Niels Bovenschen. The latter is Senior Fellow of the Centre for Academic Teaching and won the teachers' prize last spring, partly because of the connection he makes between education and research.
