Como as coisas importam. Uma abordagem material da religião. Textes de Birgit Meyer
UFRGS Editora recently published the book Como as coisas importam. Uma abordagem material da religião. Textes de Birgit Meyer. The volume presents a selection of texts authored by Prof Dr Birgit Meyer (Religious Studies).
Meyer proposes a material approach of religion, developing concepts that focus the technologies, images, objects, and spaces through means of which the religion is practiced. Through this approach, the body and sensations are major issues articulated in an analysis concerned about dimensions of power and the formation of subjects and communities. Her contributions have consolidated as an open approach to new empirical and analytical horizons in the religious studies field.
Brazilian religious groups
Carly Machado (University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) on the volume: “The publication of this book with translated texts of Birgit Meyer is the milestone of a history of long-standing relations between the author and Brazil. Meyer has a lively dialogue with researches on Brazilian religious groups and lets herself be impacted by them when reflecting on religion. Over the years, Meyer dealt with themes that she considered crucial for studies of religion: the question of modernity, mediation, images, sensoriality, materiality, heritage, among others. These and other themes are present in the researches on the Brazilian religious field. Reading Meyer's texts selected for this book certainly can contribute to another look at these subjects, as well as to the formation and consolidation of new fields of research in Brazil.”
