Multilingualism in Academia and Educational Constellations
Stefan Sudhoff and Jan ten Thije
Multilingualism in Academia and Educational Constellations, edited by Stefan Sudhoff and Jan D. ten Thije, is a new open-access book exploring multilingual policies, theoretical concepts, and academic writing in multilingual contexts. It includes linguistic analyses and emphasises the role of multilingualism in enhancing diversity and inclusion across Europe, with contributions in English and German.
Lingua receptiva
The contribution ‘Lingua Receptiva in Higher Education’ by Stefan Sudhoff and Jan ten Thije (pp. 99-125) discusses the EMP Project Receptive Language at Utrecht University and the success factors of lingua receptiva. This project allows students with sufficient receptive language skills in the language of instruction to participate in courses when they are not fluent in this language.
This allows international students to take Dutch courses while communicating in English. It promotes multilingualism and increases participation in courses. The current discussion on internationalisation gives lingua receptiva extra relevance.
