Would you like better insight in how you use your didactic qualities? Know how to optimise your interaction with students? Or would you like to practice giving feedback? Your own teaching is the focus in a video coaching course. You will be coached by a certified video/didactic coach using video recordings of your teaching. Insights gained are directly applicable in your own teaching practice. Video coaching can be used in the classroom or in student supervision.

Learning goals

The learning goals are:

  • gaining insight in your own actions, reflecting on them;
  • come up with possible improvements and apply them in your own teaching moment and once again reflecting on them

Method

We maintain a positive approach during video-coaching, aimed at reinforcing successful interactions and interventions. During video-coaching teaching is viewed from three frameworks:

  • Interaction: this concerns the interaction between you and the students. How is the contact? How do you react to each other? What is the group atmosphere like? How much support do I offer? What do you use to effectively reach the students?
  • Organisation: this concerns the structure you create in your lessons or supervision meetings. What does the classroom look like? How do you maintain order in the group?
  • Didactics: this concerns what you do to make students learn: do you ask questions, do you explain or instruct, or do you provide feedback and how do you do this? What methods do you use to reach your teaching goal?

Fee for UU lecturers

Lecturers of Utrecht University can use O&T units (if available) or can otherwise participate at reduced rates. In either case in consultation with their own faculty.

Content

The track consists of the following meeting:

Introduction meeting

In this meeting your learning question will be investigated. This question is the guiding theme when deciding which moments are recorded and for the subsequent reflection. This meeting is also used to arrange the visits of the video-coach to make the recordings.

The recording

The video-coach records about 30-45 minutes of your teaching moment. You will be provided with a clip-on microphone to ensure good audio quality and legibility. The video-coach will be moving around with the camera in hand.

Informing students

Students must be informed before the teaching moment that you will be recording them. The recordings will only be used for professional development and discussed in a video-coaching meeting. Students are allowed to make an official objection to being recorded. In this case the video-coach will keep them out of view from the camera. In practice, students rarely make objections to being recorded.

After the recording

Using the learning question you have asked, the video-coach will select two or three short clips to discuss.

Video-coaching meeting

In this meeting the clips will be watched and discussed. The result of the meeting is a reflection on several teaching activities and concrete tips to apply in future teaching.

Follow-up track

Based on the results of the video-coaching meeting a follow-up track discussed. In this follow-up track the video-coach will make another recording and you endeavour to implement the concrete tips in a teaching moment. These recordings will also be analysed and discussed in a meeting to reflect on the applied intervention. Ideally a teacher is recorded two or three times.
