Waste figures
What waste does the university produce and how much is it? To answer that question, we collect data in collaboration with our suppliers, waste processors and students. This gives us insight into the different waste streams, we learn more and more about what all ends up in our waste and where it comes from.
Highlights from the Waste Dashboard
The charts below are interactive. Tip: if you hold down the control key, you can select multiple items in a filter.
What waste streams does the university have?
This graph shows which types of waste are collected separately each year. You can see all the details in the dashboard.
CO2 emissions per year, per waste stream
See the number of kilograms of CO2 emissions from waste here. Please note: only of the waste streams shown do we know the CO2 emissions. No CO2 emission figures are currently known for the other waste streams.
Type of waste handling versus number of students and staff
What is the impact of the number of students on the amount of waste? You can see that in this graph. You can also see here what proportion of waste is recycled, incinerated or landfilled.
Standouts from the overall overview
In the years we have been tracking waste figures, a few things have stood out.

More than just recycling
Besides recycling, some waste streams are processed in other high-quality methods. For instance, furniture is refurbished, ICT hardware is reused, and oyster mushrooms are grown on the university's coffee grounds. The programme is always looking for new methods to process waste streams in a high-quality manner.
