Job description

The Utrecht Geometry Centre at Utrecht University is offering two postdoctoral research positions in algebraic topology. We are looking for excellent researchers with an interest in one of the following, or related, areas:

  • unstable, chromatic or equivariant homotopy theory;
  • operads;
  • topological modular forms;
  • higher algebra;
  • derived algebraic geometry.

The research goals should be interpreted broadly, so if you have an interest in one of these or related areas we strongly encourage you to apply. The positions do not come with teaching duties, but there is ample opportunity to teach, should you wish to do so.

We would like you to contribute actively to our research environment. This includes participating in our local seminars. In addition, you may be asked to assist in advising Bachelor's or Master's students with an interest in homotopy theory. You should be able to plan and manage their research, with guidance if required.

The preferred starting date is September 1, 2022, but earlier or later starting dates are possible.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who meet the following qualifications:

  • a PhD in mathematics or an obtained degree in this area, or a related field, before the starting date of the position;
  • a strong research background in homotopy theory or related areas;
  • working proficiency in English;
  • a collaborative and enterprising attitude towards research in mathematics.

Offer

Our Institute has a very active topology community, which includes Gijs Heuts, Lennart Meier and Ieke Moerdijk. You will be able to participate in seminars and workshops in Utrecht. Moreover, we are in close collaboration with the neighboring topology group in Nijmegen. Funding is available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.

We also offer:

  • a position for two years with a potential extension to a third year;
  • a full-time gross salary ranging from €2,836 to €4,474 in scale 10;
  • benefits including 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO).

In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of its own arrangements. For example, there are agreements on professional development, leave arrangements and sports. We also give you the opportunity to expand your terms of employment yourself via the Employment Conditions Selection Model. This is how we like to encourage you to continue to grow.

About the organisation

At the Faculty of Science there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes which work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects.

Utrecht University is a friendly and ambitious university at the heart of an ancient city. We love to welcome new scientists to our city – a thriving cultural hub that is consistently rated as one of the world’s happiest cities. We are renowned for our innovative interdisciplinary research and our emphasis on inspirational research and excellent education. We are equally well-known for our familiar atmosphere and the can-do attitude of our people. This fundamental connection attracts Researchers, Professors and PhD candidates from all over the globe, making both the university and the Faculty of Science a vibrant international and wonderfully diverse community.
