Life is the most complex system known to humankind. Bioinformatics driven data analyses is a unique approach to study life in all its complexity, ranging from molecules to ecosystems. At Utrecht Life Sciences, internationally leading bioinformatic educators and researchers connect to address the complexity of life in different biological and data domains.

We are looking for an ambitious scientist to join us as a new group leader. As a group leader you are interested in developing or expanding your own research line in computational biology and bioinformatics. You like to be inspired by and contribute to a unique computational biology environment and collaborate with excellent biologists at Utrecht Science Park and beyond. You possess a proven commitment and talent for research. You are a team player who is intrinsically motivated to take ownership and create value while sharing your knowledge both internally and across the wider (global) community. As teaching bioinformatics is an essential part of the position, we in particular also invite candidates to apply who have a clear vision on and a demonstrable motivation to teach, and who enjoy transferring their knowledge to the next generation of scientists by supervising and teaching BSc and MSc students and coordinating courses. 

Qualifications

We are looking for a new colleague to complement our team at an academic as well as personal level. To excel in the role, you will draw on:

  • a clear vision of your own research line that navigates the treasure trove of available life sciences data;
  • a promising track record of research dissemination including publications, presentations, and outreach activities;
  • your passion for teaching, mentoring, and coaching students;
  • your collaborative and proactive spirit.

Holding a Basic or Senior Teaching Qualification is considered a plus. If you do not possess one, you will be asked to obtain a Basic Teaching Qualification within 5 years.

Offer

  • a tenure track position for five years that will be subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation. If evaluations are positive after five years, the position becomes permanent;
  • a full-time gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranging between €3,807 and €5,211 per month (scale 11 at the level of Assistant Professor (universitair docent; UD) according to the Collective Labour Agreement (cao) for Dutch Universities;
  • salaries are supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the cao for Dutch Universities.

In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the cao for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has several additional arrangements. About the organisation

The Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics group (TBB, Theoretical Biology & Bioinformatics | Utrecht University) uses computational biology, bioinformatics, modelling, and big data to address both fundamental and applied questions in the life sciences. A selection of ongoing research lines includes the evolution of genomes, protein complexes, systems genetics, metagenomics, host-microbe interactions, and the principles of ecology and evolution. Our research interests guide our educational mission, which is to inspire and educate the next generation of biology students in bioinformatics and data-driven biology. Our courses range from increasingly specialized bachelor courses, to introductory scripting courses and topical bioinformatics courses at the MSc level. We teach students in the biology, molecular life sciences and biomedical sciences bachelor programs as well as our own MSc programme ‘Bioinformatics and Biocomplexity’, which combines all aspects of computational biology ranging from data analysis to theoretical modelling. This programme is part of the Graduate School Life Sciences which educates excellent Life Sciences students across two academic institutes at Utrecht University and University Medical Center Utrecht. Together with more than 35 research groups distributed over five research and educational institutes, we are part of the Utrecht Bioinformatics Centre that combines world-class bioinformatics research and coordinates bioinformatics education at all levels at the Utrecht Science Park.

At the Faculty of Science there are six departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects.
