Department:
Department Clinical Sciences
Hours per week:
36 to 40
Application deadline:

We are looking for two enthusiastic locums to join our equine reproduction team at Utrecht University starting 1 April to 31 August 2025.

Your job

As part of our reproduction team, you will work alongside five veterinarians (one ACT diplomate, three ECAR diplomates, and one ECAR resident), three clinical assistants, three lab assistants, a secretary, and a small group of dedicated researchers. Together, we examine and/or treat a wide range of reproductive conditions in mares and stallions, with a particular focus on assisted reproductive technologies such as embryo transfer and ovum pick-up as clinical services.

During the breeding season, our clinic handles approximately 300 mare inseminations, 150 embryo flushes, and 850 embryo transfers (frozen-thawed ICSI and fresh-flushed embryos). Your responsibilities will include routine reproductive management of donor and recipient mares, performing embryo flushes, and teaching veterinary students and residents, among other tasks. Additionally, you will participate in out-of-hours duties, including routine weekend work (one in three weekends) and obstetrical emergencies.

Your qualities

You are a veterinarian with extensive experience of clinical equine reproduction, including assisted reproductive technologies. While not required, a post-graduate diploma in equine reproduction (such as European College of Animal Reproduction or American College of Theriogenologists) is preferred. You should share the University Equine Clinic’s commitment to quality, efficiency, and excellent customer service. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential for this role.

Our offer

We offer:

  • a position for a period of five months (starting 1 April 2025);
  • a working week of 40 hours and a gross monthly salary between €3,345 and €6,148 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 10-11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University has a number of schemes and facilities of its own for employees. This includes schemes facilitating professional development, leave schemes and schemes for sports and cultural activities, as well as discounts on software and other IT products. We also offer access to additional employee benefits through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage our employees to continue to invest in their growth.
