Job description

As a Data Steward at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS, Department of Population Health Sciences) you will play a crucial role in supporting data stewardship in various national and international research programs.
You will:

  • support researchers and students to store, (re)use and analyse research (meta-)data and information according to FAIR principles;
  • advise researchers on the management of research data and on procedures and technical aspects that are important for the quality of (meta)data;
  • advise on the improvement of the data architecture per project and across projects and assist in implementing the improvements where necessary;
  • advise researchers about how to deal with privacy-sensitive data in accordance with the (GDPR or AVG) guidelines;
  • document workflows and data protocols for projects and researchers in the research domains;
  • organise training courses or workshops that relate to the Research Data Management field;
  • assist in managing and sustainably storing and/or publishing research data.

You will lead the data management team of the Institute currently consisting out of 3 data managers and a data architect. In addition, you will liaise with other Data stewards at Utrecht University (i.e. Research Data Management Support).


What do you bring?

  • higher education background in Data Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or related field;
  • knowledge and experience on processing scientific data and willingness to further train yourself in this;
  • active participation in networks of expertise and you are well-informed about current developments in RDM, FAIR and Open Science;
  • experience with metadata management, data harmonisation standards, audit trails and data capture tools;
  • experience in handling privacy-sensitive data and knowledge of GDPR;
  • you enjoy working in a dynamic and innovative research environment;
  • you work independently, proactively and have a strong sense of responsibility and organization sensitivity;
  • you communicate well, verbally as well as in writing, both in English and in Dutch.


This is an appointment of 0.9 - 1 FTE for the duration of 1 year. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is one of the possibilities. The minimum gross salary is € 3,974 and the maximum gross salary is € 6,181 (scale 11-12 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment. Besides that, you will receive a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
