History

The name 1636 refers to the year Utrecht University was founded. The mantelpiece depicts Van der Hoolck and Van Velthuisen, mayors of the city of Utrecht in 1636. On February 10, 1917, Johanna Westerdijk (1883-1961) delivered her inaugural lecture and became the first female professor in the Netherlands at the age of 34. Exactly 100 years later, 22 percent of Utrecht University's staff is female. The portrait gallery on the wall honors 100 female professors.
