History
From 1836 to 1956, the masquerade was one of the highlights of Utrecht University's anniversary celebrations. A spectacle in which costumed individuals were accompanied by all sorts of exotic animals and horses. The theme often featured an event from Dutch history. From 1896 onward, an open-air play was also held. The term "masquerade" refers to the former custom among students of holding costume parades at anniversary celebrations.
