History

Utrecht University has been using the Aula since 1824. The Aula was built in 1460 as Great Chapter House of the Dom Cathedral. This part of the University Hall used to be the meeting room of the five chapters of Utrecht. The provincial councils of Utrecht used to meet here as well. Because of the reformation, the chapter hall lost its original function as meeting hall for the Great Chapter House. In 1634, the Illustre School was founded, shortly followed by the Academy. The 23rd of January 1579 marks an important event in the chapter hall, namely the date of signing of the Unie van Utrecht, the Union of Utrecht, which was later used as a baseline for the Dutch Republic.
