FAQ University Council Elections
General
This is a chosen group of twelve students (for students, by students) and staff members who represent the interests of all UU people. The council meets with the Executive Board, advises and has decision-making power over important topics.
The University Council represents students and staff members’ interests within the university. The council has a say in important decisions on matters such as education policy, accommodation and finance, and can advise and approve proposals made by the Executive Board.
Voting
The elections for the University Council take place each year in May. The exact dates are announced in advance on the Utrecht University website. In 2025, the elections take place from 12 up to and including 14 May.
Students and staff members at Utrecht University who are registered as bachelor or master student or staff member, respectively, are allowed to vote during the University Council elections. The reference date is 1 March.
You can vote online via uu.nl/vote. In the election period, you receive information and a link for voting via your student email account. All you have to do is log in and make your choice.
Your vote matters in the decision making. By voting, you can exert influence on changes within UU. So voting is your opportunity to make the university better.
In the University Council elections, you cannot change your vote once it has been submitted. Ensure you choose well before confirming your vote.
The results are announced on 16 May via students.uu.nl.
Becoming a council member
You can become a candidate by joining a party or by making your own candidate list. This year, the deadline for this was until 10 April 2025.
A term in the University Council for students lasts one year. After this period, council members can be candidates again if they want to be.
