Solar Farm Bunnik

As Utrecht University (UU), we want to be CO2 neutral by 2030. Sustainability can partly be achieved with solar energy. Most buildings are therefore equipped with solar panels. To make big steps, other applications are also needed, including larger field arrangements of solar panels, which do not physically fit in the Utrecht Science Park (USP). Therefore, UU is building a solar park in Bunnik and will operate it for the next 30 years.

The solar farm, together with the existing solar panels on the university buildings, will cover about 30% of UU's total electricity needs.

The university is serious about reducing our carbon emissions. We are doing everything we can to do that, and that includes finding solutions off campus. The solar park in Bunnik is one such solution. An opportunity we are therefore grasping with both hands.

Origin of the Solar Farm

The idea for the Solar Farm in Bunnik originated in 2021 from developer IX Zon. Together with Energy cooperative Bunnik and later by Utrecht University (UU), a plan for a thirteen-hectare solar farm was developed. UU became co-owner so that the power generated could be used directly for the Utrecht Science Park.

The energy cooperative was aiming for local ownership, but due to disappointing market conditions, high investment costs and insufficient subsidies, financing proved unfeasible. By mutual agreement, it was decided that UU would take over the entire project. While this leaves the energy cooperative out of ownership, it made an important contribution to the landscaping, communication and participation with local residents.

The solar farm makes an important contribution to regional energy transition: sustainable energy is generated and used locally, without placing an additional burden on the electricity grid. For UU, it represents a major step towards making its energy supply more sustainable. The energy cooperative uses the knowledge gained for new projects in the region.
