Monastry corridor

The monastery dates from the 15th century. Utrecht monks walked through the corridor singing and praying. The sculpted triangles above the windows are called 'wimbergen' and can be seen from inside the garden. They represent the life of Saint Martin in chronological order. Starting at the entrance gate called Achter de Dom (Behind the Cathedral). Saint Martin is the patron saint of the city of Utrecht. The city emblem of Utrecht is said to owe its red-and-white colours to his cloak. He cut this cloak into two pieces to give one to a beggar.
