UU dialogues regarding the situation in Gaza and Israel

Utrecht University monitors and facilitates independent thinking, analysis and critical debate. This means that there is room to have the (academic) conversation with each other about the situation in Gaza and Israel.

Within several faculties, students and staff have already facilitated, or are planning to facilitate, lectures, meetings, and dialogue sessions. Also, at other parts of Utrecht University, students and staff are organizing meetings to exchange views openly. We appreciate this involvement. The Executive Board has regular discussions about how the situation in Gaza and Israel affects the university. We are touched by the stories of colleagues and students.

Room for different perspectives and feelings

In many places within the university, we see people talk with mutual understanding of each other's views and feelings. Usually, these are conversations in the context of a course and in small groups. This way provides a platform for a personal and respectful exchange of thoughts and points of view. Within Utrecht University, there is room for different perspectives and feelings. Calls for hatred, violence, intimidation or calls that otherwise transgress the boundaries of open society, naturally do not fit in with this.

The open and inquisitive dialogue with each other is even more important now that emotions about the situation in Gaza and Israel are running high. We trust that everyone will help to conduct conversations in a respectful and informed manner. It is essential that Utrecht University is and remains a safe place for all students and staff, regardless of their origin, background, or political beliefs.

Are you interested in having a conversation yourself?

Employees can consult with their manager, and students can reach out to a lecturer. Of course, a form of employee and student representation, can also be used to think along about Utrecht University's policy.
