Utrecht Time Machine

What would it be like if you could take a journey through time yourself?

Together through time

History is all around us in Utrecht, and the Utrecht Time Machine brings it to life using innovative digital techniques. Old times are placed right in our world, accessible directly on your smartphone. Every walk or bike ride becomes an exciting journey through the past of the city and province.

Utrecht Time Machine (UTM) makes the rich history of Utrecht visible and experiential by combining linked data with visualization technology. This creates innovative, interactive ways for a broad public to engage with history. Participants contribute sources and resources and are encouraged to explore the combined data from various heritage partners.

During the lustrum year, UTM develops a multidisciplinary, interactive project in which students, researchers, and residents collaboratively map the history of Utrecht, the University of Utrecht, and the wider region.

Connection

The project aligns with the 2026 lustrum theme of connecting city and region. Utrecht Time Machine brings together students, researchers, heritage communities, social organizations, and residents. Together, they tell and experience the stories of the city and region, with a focus on university history and migration stories in specific Utrecht neighborhoods.

UU Playground

During the lustrum year, the project will be presented at the UU Playground, marking the launch of new routes. Students will showcase the routes and the creative process behind them. Additional activities throughout the city and region will allow participants to travel through Utrecht’s past both physically and digitally, including historical neighborhood walks. Dates for all activities will be announced later.
