SPACES
Design an outdoor space where all children can play, exercise and relax
What does an outdoor space look like where every child can join in? During SPACES, children and young people, parents, researchers, urban designers and policymakers come together to explore inclusive play and sport in the city.
SPACES stands for Supporting Participation and Accessibility for Children with a disability or a chronic disease through Empowering infrastructure Solutions in urban physical space. This interdisciplinary project develops solutions for the physical outdoor environment, so that all children can play, take part in sport and meet one another. This includes children with a disability or chronic illness.
Together, we’ll explore the barriers that stand in the way of inclusive sport and play. What makes a playground, sports ground or relaxation area accessible? And what creative solutions can help make inclusive play and sport possible?
Play is the highest form of research.
Working together towards a sustainable, inclusive city
SPACES ties in with the 2026 anniversary celebrations, which will focus on the connection between Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht, the city of Utrecht and the Utrecht region.
The project focuses on ensuring all children can take part in play and sport in the city. This is achieved through co-creation with a broad group of stakeholders. Inclusion from an early age can help strengthen the bond between children and parents. In this way, we are working together towards a sustainable, inclusive city.
