UU Reserved Accommodation Programme: PhDs

Average rental prices are roughly between 750 and 1000 euros, including facilities. When booking a unit, you pay a deposit consisting of the first month's rent and a non-refundable reservation fee. Furthermore, depending on the type of accommodation, the deposit sometimes also includes your last period rent, a bedding package (if ordered) and cleaning costs. In order to book reserved accommodation, you need an SSH Short Stay account. You can register an account up to 4 months prior to your arrival. For example: if your rental period starts 1 December, the earliest you can register is 1 August. Please note that we cannot guarantee availability; we advise you not to postpone your registration to a later date or month, and to check the booking portal regularly for updates.

1. Your arrival needs to be reported to the International Service Desk (ISD). This is done by your faculty's HR department. If HR has not informed the ISD, please ask your UU supervisor to contact HR about this; 

2. Once the ISD is notified of your arrival, you can register via the SSH Short Stay website. Registration is free of charge; 

3. Make sure you select “International PhDs, Staff & Guests - Utrecht University” under Faculty/department, and “UU PhD Candidates” under Type of resident;

4. Your registration will be reviewed by the ISD. Please note that this might take some time;

5. Once your registration is approved, you will be notified via email and you can book available offers in your registered timeframe.

Registration not approved

The ISD may determine that your registration is incorrect, incomplete or that you are not eligible. If this is the case, you receive an automated message from SSH Short Stay with the reason why your registration is not approved. Please read this email carefully; if you have any questions on how to proceed, kindly contact the ISD.

No availability

It is possible that there is no availability within your registered time frame. You can consider starting your programme at a later time, looking for housing by yourself, or starting in temporary accommodation, such as a hotel or hostel.
