Animal Behaviour and Welfare

Our research brings together animal behaviour, animal welfare, physiology, ethics, neuroscience, psychology, and veterinary medicine to advance understanding of animal welfare and foster sustainable, responsible human-animal relationships.

  • The Animal Behaviour group studies the dynamic interplay between animal adaptability, environmental challenges, and early life experiences, and formulates concepts and methods to assess and improve animal welfare
  • The Animal Welfare group develops methods to assess animal welfare through behaviour, decision-making, and animal communication, and translates findings into practical tools
  • The Sustainable Animal Stewardship group explores and analyzes the societal and moral foundations of animal-related issues in an integrated and interdisciplinary way
  • The Behavioural Neuroscience group investigates how healthy behaviour develops, what the impact is of play during early development, and why some individuals are more vulnerable or resilient to behavioural problems

Together, we generate actionable insights that support veterinarians, policymakers, animal owners, and care professionals in improving animal welfare in real-world settings.
