Dossiers
Curious about how we ensure happy, healthy animals? Or how we can make sure everyone can breathe clean air? Maybe you wonder how dangerous plastic really is. At Veterinary Medicine, these are exactly the questions we deal with.
Animal welfare in livestock farming
There is an increasing focus on animal welfare in livestock farming. The Dutch government wants entirely animal-friendly livestock farming by 2040. But what does such livestock farming look like? And how can we achieve it? The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine contributes to this important task with education and research on animal health and welfare.
Healthy Breeding of Dogs and Cats
Dutch people love pets. We want them to be healthy. Unfortunately, hereditary conditions in dogs and cats often lead to serious illnesses. By breeding healthily, we can prevent this. That's why we conduct research at Veterinary Medicine. We translate the results into practical solutions for veterinarians, breeders, policymakers, and education for future veterinarians.
Zoonoses
It is etched in our collective memory. In 2019, the virus named COVID-19 broke out and caused the entire world to 'shut down' for two years. Many people fell ill and died from the effects of this Coronavirus, and many still suffer from post-Covid symptoms ('Long COVID') as a result of an infection. The coronavirus is an example of a zoonosis, an infectious disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
