Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS)

The Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences, known as IRAS, is an interfaculty research institute of the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Medical Sciences at Utrecht University.

Mission

The IRAS seeks answers to the question: How does the environment affect human and animal health? By gaining more insight into the interaction between humans, animals and the environment, we want to improve the health of this trinity, also known as One Health.

How do we do that?

We provide education and conduct research in the field of health risks posed to humans by exposure to pathogens and possible hazardous substances in the environment, at work or in the food chain. The institute also studies the effects on ecosystems.

The core of IRAS is risk assessment science. This discipline evaluates the probability and potential severity of harm from exposure to the environment, integrating data from toxicology, epidemiology and exposure science to support evidence-based decision-making.

Our ultimate goal is to provide scientific insights that can be translated into practical regulatory strategies to protect and improve the health of animals, humans and nature.
