Position of women

Has the position of women in Mexico changed in the past 50 years?

De positie van de vrouw in Mexico

In Mexico, the difference between women – as a result of their social class, ethnicity, and education – is enormous. Nevertheless, in the last 50 years, we have seen some striking changes with respect to women in Mexico. There is increasingly more attention for women, for their  participation in education, employment, migration and politics. The contributions of women towards development and democratic processes have become more visible. As have the scope and increase of violence against women and girls. Furthermore, in the last 50 years, Mexico has developed a policy to improve the position of women which is, amongst other things, evidenced by various changes in legislation. The attitude towards men and women is, however, often more stubborn than just political attention and legislation. Still, even the notions and views about femininity and masculinity are dynamic and changing, be it rather slowly. The macho is no longer, if he ever was, the ideal in Mexico, nor is the silent, suffering woman. The Mexican woman makes herself heard and strives for empowerment.
