Inclusive Science Teaching
Are you interested in equity, diversity and inclusion in education? Have you experienced challenges in your teaching regarding these topics?
Diversity and inclusion are key challenges for Science education in the 21st century. The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee of the Faculty of Science has so far focused on gender issues for personnel, and offers trainings on bias in recruitment. These initiatives are very important. However, the international literature indicates that teaching is also an important part of inclusive education, and that the challenges are to an extent specific to mathematics, computer science, the natural and life sciences (e.g., Avraamidou, 2020; Solomon, 2007).
Inclusive Science Teaching Workshop
The project has developed an ‘Inclusive Science Teaching’ workshop building on existing initiatives to support the formation of a community of practice within the faculty, defining and practicing inclusive Science education in the Dutch context. The project is supported with money from the Utrecht Education Stimulation Foundation (USO), Utrecht University.

About the workshop
The workshop consisting of 2 sessions provides the space to share own personal experiences and doubts, jointly discuss different approaches to tackle EDI aspects in the field of science teaching and gain a better understanding of what is at stake when it comes to equity in education. The workshop intends to empower teachers from the Faculty of Science to embrace inclusive teaching as an ongoing process that does not take place overnight but rather is a cycle that involves reflection and comes from a genuine place.
Example of a dilemma during the workshop
"From a focus group conducted with first-generation university students in the faculty, you hear that some students find your lectures hard to understand and jargon-heavy. A student representative from the educational advisory committees approaches you to tell you that some students in your class, especially first-generation students, are not following your explanations and they tell you it is because you employ very technical language."
