What I find so special about the GeoLab is that our researchers and students can count on a consistently high level of knowledge and experience in a broad spectrum of lab units, and that at the same time, there is so much awareness for sustainability - practice what we preach!
The GeoLab is one of the main laboratory facilities of the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University. Here, we host a large equipment pool to process and analyze (environmental) samples and to perform non-conventional experiments in different lab units.
Besides its fundamentality for conducting research projects, the GeoLab constitutes a place that promotes students and new generations of scientists, fosters (inter)national and interdisciplinary collaborations, embraces sustainable practices and is a think tank for new scientific procedures. We actively investigate and adopt more sustainable practices as also evidenced by LEAF certificates.
Our different lab units host specific laboratory equipment and know-how, which can be used separately or in combination in various research fields of our Faculty and beyond, in national and international networks.
Sustainability at Geolab

We are continuously working to reduce the environmental footprint of our research activities, contributing to solutions in the broadest sense.
Sustainability has a high priority in our daily work in the GeoLab. Laboratories typically consume far more energy, water, and single-use plastics than office spaces, generating substantial waste, including hazardous materials. Therefore, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact through innovative and efficient sustainability practices that not only benefit the planet but also enhance the quality, safety, and efficiency of our research. Join us on our journey toward a greener, more sustainable future and learn more about our efforts.
