Our labs and facilities
Laboratories
GeoLab (Vening Meinesz Building B)
The GeoLab comprises our main geochemical/geological analytical and experimental laboratories, including:
In addition, the Geolabs for soil and sample preparation are housed in the Earth Simulation Laboratory.
Earth Simulation Laboratory (ESL)
The ESL comprises our main laboratories for experiments on the physical behaviour of the earth, including:
- The High Pressure & Temperature (HPT) lab
- Experimental flume labs: Metronome, Debris-Flow flume, Turbidite flume, Eurotank, Tilting flume (the latter two facilities are physically located in the Vening Meinesz building C)
- The Tectonic Modelling Laboratory (TecLab)
- The Soil Physics and Extraction lab
The ESL also houses microscopy labs, workshops for instrument development & maintenance, our extensive repository of mineral/rock/soil samples, and the storage of field equipment.
Paleomagnetic Laboratory Fort Hoofddijk
The Paleomagnetic Laboratory is located in the Fort Hoofddijk in the Botanical Gardens of Utrecht University. The research of the Fort Hoofddijk Paleomagnetic Laboratory covers nearly all fields of paleomagnetism.
