Swaantje Mondt Fund
Goal: Aims to give Dutch PhD students the opportunity to conduct research abroad and foreign PhD students the chance to come to Utrecht for research.
Founded by: Martine and Jaap Mondt
The fund, founded at the end of 2016 by Martine and Jaap Mondt, focuses mainly on PhD research in the following two areas: law and mathematical- and natural sciences. With the Swaantje Mondt fund, Martine and Jaap Mondt help young academic talent to gain experience abroad. And thereby expand their knowledge and network. The founders manage a similar fund at Leiden University.
From our own experience, we know how important it is to see a lot of the world: it shapes you.
Research
To be eligible for a contribution from this fund, it is not a prerequisite that your research falls within the disciplines of law and/or mathematical - and natural sciences. But it is preferred.
Since its inception, 34 PhD students have been able to go abroad or just continue their research in Utrecht.
For instance, one recipient worked on a mathematical model to explain 'vegetation patterns in savannas'. Another recipient used the grant to visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to work on research on 'entrepreneurial and innovation capacity of European regions'. Being part of a research group abroad brings creativity and inspiration.
I showed the group the work we do in Utrecht (...), which also provided useful ideas for them.
Fund providers Martine en Jaap Mondt
Martine Mondt worked as a judge and state counsel and was a member of the objections advisory committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She studied law in Utrecht and is still involved with the university and its alumni. Among other things, through her work as secretary of The Hague's giving circle: Hofvijverkring.
Jaap Mondt went to work for Shell Research after completing his Bachelor's degree in Geology in Leiden and Master's and PhD in Geophysics at Utrecht University. After retirement, he founded Breakaway, a geophysical data company.
Their daughter Swaantje Mondt was killed in a traffic accident at the age of 19. This fund was set up in memory of Swaantje.
