Grant applications
The following persons and institutions are particularly, but not exclusively, eligible for grants from the Hoogewerff-Hendrix Fund for Italy Studies:
- Students, PhD students, researchers and staff members connected to Dutch research institutions, in particular Utrecht University;
- the Dutch-Flemish association Werkgroep Italiƫ Studies;
- the Royal Dutch Institute of Rome;
- the Dutch Interuniversity Institute of Art History in Florence;
- Dutch museums managing substantial collections of art objects originating from Italian culture or closely related to it.
The types of research activities eligible for funding and how to submit applications are announced annually in spring. Applications can be submitted and granted twice a year. The first round of applications will start in spring 2026, with awards in autumn 2026.
Guidelines
The Fund does not subsidise salary and/or overhead costs. In the case of grants to institutions (not private individuals), these are supplements to funding offered from these organising bodies; this supplement cannot exceed sixty percent (60%) of the budget to be used for the activity.
Grants have a size that indicatively varies between 1,000 and 5,000 euros. Decisions on awards are made by a Spending Advisory Committee, consisting of the chairman of the Working Group on Italian Studies (chair), the professor of Italian at UU (vice-chair), the directors of NIKI and KNIR, as well as a representative from the museum world.
Submitting applications
Applications for support from the Fund for Italy Studies can be submitted via the Utrecht University Fund application portal from spring 2026.
