VLOT
The VLOT is an instrument designed to evaluate the level of language exposure in the home. Using a few yes/no items, professionals can determine in about 5 minutes if there is an indication for insufficient language stimulation in the home. The VLOT is also applicable for multilingual families, where stimulation can be measured per language.
Social relevance
The VLOT is used by health professionals in the Netherlands to help decide which children should be referred to Early Childhood Education programmes providing extra language support (VVE). Moreover, professionals (such as speech and language therapists) use this instruments in cases where they need to form a first impression of the (dual) language exposure in the home situation.
