• Utrecht University uses a system of positions called FLOW (functies, loopbanen en waardering).
  • FLOW applies to all researchers and lecturers.
  • The highest position is that of hoogleraar (full professor).
  • Below that, positions are divided in three areas of expertise research, education and research/education; in each area there are three levels: UHD, UD en junior.
  • PhD students have the rank of AIO (trainee researcher),
  • The table below contains an overview of the various positions.
  • Listed are the FLOW position names, and also (in red) the commonly used English terminology.
  • The levels UHD en UD require a certain qualification.
  • For lecturers and researchers lacking the proper qualifications, a custom program is draw up, aimed at obtaining the required qualification.
  • An appointment at junior level as lecturer or lecturer/researcher should lead to a base qualification education.
  • Getting a qualification does not automatically lead to a higher position; unless an agreement was made otherwise and separately, one has to apply for an open position.
  • For more details see informatie over de FLOW kwalificaties (sorry, in dutch).
  • A postdoc is generally appointed temporarily. The base qualification research (PhD) is required.
  • A scientific programmer ("wetenschappelijk programmeur") is appointed as researcher on junior level. The base qualification research is not required.
