The Department of Biology coordinates the teaching of the Bachelor’s programme in Biology and also several Master’s programmes that are offered through the School of Life Sciences and the School of Natural Sciences.
Seven Dutch universities offer a programme in Biology, but Utrecht University offers the broadest Biology programme in the Netherlands.
The Biology programme at Utrecht welcomes 400 first-year students each year. Utrecht also has the largest number of research groups, providing students with the widest range of options.
The Department of Biology at Utrecht University works closely with other programmes (Earth Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Physics and Chemistry), and during your studies, you will have an opportunity to focus on the interfaces between these different areas.
Aside from the programme, the city of Utrecht is itself a reason that many students apply to study here.
Utrecht offers the broadest Biology programme in the Netherlands. As a result, Biology students can choose from among many different courses. They can also follow courses from outside the Biology programme (e.g., combining Earth Sciences with Biology).
The Department of Biology offers one Master’s degree programme in Biological Sciences. Within this Master’s programme, students can follow several different study tracks. These tracks can be seen as a continuation of the study tracks that were offered during the Bachelor’s programme.
Students choose one Master’s study track. The tracks are offered by the the School of Life Sciences and the School of Natural Sciences. The Department of Biology also makes a large contribution to the teaching of the following Master’s study tracks:
- Bio Inspired Innovation
- Environmental Biology
- Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences
- Neuroscience and Cognition
- Toxicology and Environmental Health
- Cancer, Stem Cells and Developmental Biology
- Science Education and Communication
