Lustrum 2026 Communications Toolkit

In 2026, Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht will celebrate their lustrum together: 390 years of collaboration and progress in research, healthcare, and education. Together, we work on new solutions that truly matter for everyone in our city and society. The celebration focuses on connection, because together we truly make a difference.

Connect. Create Change.
'Connect. Create Change.' is the slogan of the 2026 lustrum.

The lustrum year offers a unique opportunity to bundle our shared stories and communicate them in a focused way. By working with a single overarching lustrum theme, we create coherence and strengthen our positioning.

To clearly bring together all initiatives within the lustrum year, we will add the lustrum label “Connect. Create Change.” to all communications.

This label serves as a recognisable hallmark, making it clear which activities and communications are part of the lustrum.

Communication goals

For the joint 2026 lustrum of Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht, collaboration with both the city and broader region are central. Our communications actively engage society in research, education, and healthcare by sharing knowledge, entering into dialogue, and listening to what matters to people.

An important element of this approach is the Utrecht Dialogues: interactive events at inspiring locations where science, healthcare, education, and residents come together. In addition, a series of lustrum projects will help demonstrate how Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht, and society jointly create tangible change, thereby inspiring prospective students, staff, and donors to get involved.

Visual style

Our visual language is an important component of the lustrum’s visual identity. A consistent style ensures recognizability and coherence, making it immediately clear at a glance that all activities and stories belong to the same joint lustrum.

  • Colour palette

For the 2026 lustrum, a combined colour palette has been chosen to reflect the collaboration between both institutions. The primary colours of Utrecht University (yellow #FFCD00) and UMC Utrecht (blue #1191FA) are used, complemented by orange (#EC6622) as an accent colour. Black and white serve as supporting colours to ensure balance and readability.

  • Font

Across all lustrum communications, we use the shared typeface Open Sans. This ensures a consistent look and feel across all materials. Open Sans is an open-licence font and is available by default on every Solis workstation. On other systems, it can be downloaded free of charge via Google Fonts (Open Sans and Open Sans Condensed). It is also available free of charge via Adobe Typekit for designers working with Adobe Creative Cloud.

  • Logos

Where possible, we use the logos of both Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht in our communications. This emphasises the joint nature of the lustrum and presents us externally as a single, unified entity.

Photography

For the lustrum, an overarching photography concept has been chosen to visually bring the theme of Connection and Humanity to life and to create recognizability across all communications.

We portray staff and students of Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht in group selfies, with connection, togetherness, and inclusion at the forefront. By doing this, we show the faces behind science and healthcare and make visible the everyday commitment to progress of ordinary people.

Overlays for digital communication

An overlay is a graphic element that you place on top of an image or video. It acts as an extra layer without covering or replacing the original image. Using overlays in the lustrum style allows you to easily create a connection between the message you're sharing and the overarching message of the lustrum.

There are overlays available for social media, for video (both horizontal and vertical), and for website headers.

Social Media overlay

For social media, we use the lustrum label with the slogan “Connect. Create Change.”. It can be placed over posts or stories without distracting from the background image.
Using the social media label helps establish a consistent visual style that makes the lustrum clearly recognizable across all our channels.

Video overlay

For videos, we use lower thirds to reinforce the lustrum’s visual identity without distracting from the content. These text bars appear at the bottom of the screen and can be used to provide additional context, such as names, roles, or brief explanations.

Header overlays for websites

There are three lustrum-style overlays available for header images on web pages. Each version differs in the placement of the graphic elements, making the header overlays suitable for a wide range of images while ensuring the content remains clearly visible.
