Living lab: Greening the UBB square

Boring, too much stone and too hot in the summer: the tiled inner courtyard of the University Library in the city centre is not an inviting place. Because of the heat in the summer and the lack of shadow and green, the square sees little use. That is a shame, as the location has the potential to become a lively square where history, biodiversity, education and relaxation come together. That is why in September 2023, student Saar van der Horst took the initiative to explore the possibilities for a greener, more vibrant square.

With this living lab, we aim to transform the inner square of the university into a green oasis, where there is ample space for experimentation, innovation and cultural expression of students in the field of sustainability, biodiversity and education. The Centre for Living Labs stimulates and facilitates the process from idea to lab, bringing the right people together and guiding this project, through co-creation sessions, into a living lab.
