Just Transitions

Climate change is not purely a technical and environmental issue. It is just as much a social and economic challenge, for which social and economic solutions are needed. Therefore climate change action cannot be taken without taking issues around poverty and vulnerability into account.
As the world seeks to address climate change and transition to new ways of life, there is an increasing demand for what is called a ‘just transition’; the need to protect all people that might be negatively impacted by climate change. Moreover, the transition to a more sustainable way of life presents us with an opportunity to address existing social injustices.

The flagship is currently under development. As of September 2022 the Centre for Global Challenges and Utrecht University’s strategic theme Pathways to Sustainability will be hosting a Prins Claus Chair in Just Transition. The Chair will be held by Fatima Denton, Director of the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA). Dr Denton will be playing an important role in developing the UGlobe flagship Just Transitions.
