Elangata Wuas, Southern Kenya
The platform’s first collaboration took place in Elangata Wuas, a Maasai community in Southern Kenya. In September 2024, two UGlobe interns engaged with the community to identify opportunities for partnership with Utrecht University.
Elangata Wuas has undergone significant changes, including greater access to electricity and the internet, leading to economic and cultural shifts. However, the community still faces major challenges, such as water scarcity, poor infrastructure, and the impacts of climate change. In response, local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) have emerged to tackle climate change, education, sustainable agriculture, and entrepreneurship. These CBOs will serve as key partners for educators and students.
Elangata Wuas holds a special connection to UGlobe through Joost de Laat, former UGlobe director, who supported community-based activities there from 2006 to 2015.
