Bicycle wrecks and orphaned bicycles

Utrecht University conducts orphan bicycle campaigns in and around the bicycle parking facilities it manages. The aim of these actions is to maintain the parking capacity of these facilities. This is done by removing bicycle wrecks and bicycles parked too long. The fietsparkeerreglement (PDF, in Dutch) forms the basis for this action.

The abandoned bicycle campaign consists of the following phases

  1. The university identifies the locations where the action will take place.
  2. The university marks these locations with an announcement of the action.
  3. Bicycles in the marked stands are given a clearly recognisable label.
  4. Up to four weeks after labelling: owners remove the label from their bicycles.
  5. Four weeks after labeling: the university removes any bikes that still have a label and takes them to the transit point depot for materials. If necessary, locks are cut off. Damaged locks will not be reimbursed.
  6. Up to four weeks after removal: the owner can collect their labeled bicycle from the depot at the materials transfer point on Sorbonnelaan after making an appointment.

The university performs the abandoned bike actions in areas managed by the university. Only selected bicycle parking spaces in the Utrecht Science Park and near university buildings in the Utrecht city centre will be included in the action. The university will not remove bicycles from the International Campus Utrecht and the grounds of the Hogeschool Utrecht.
