Renovation of Utrecht University Hall

Every year, the Utrecht University Hall attracts two hundred thousand visitors. As such, the Utrecht University Hall is busy throughout the year. This means that maintenance can only take place during the summer holidays and this short period does not allow for large-scale work. For several years now, it has been clear that the Utrecht University Hall, including the courtyard, courtyard and Pandhof (excluding the garden), needs to be renovated in line with the requirements of the present time, vision and ambitions in the areas of sustainability, accessibility, inclusiveness and spatial programming, among others.

The Utrecht University Hall on Domplein is the heart and face of Utrecht University. The Aula is the oldest part of the building and dates back to 1462. In 1579, the Union of Utrecht was signed here, considered the beginning of the Dutch state. Since its renovation and major refurbishment in 2001, the Utrecht University Hall has been used for academic ceremonies such as degree ceremonies, promotions and orations and is a home for debate, lectures and conferences. In addition, the Faculty Club, central meeting place for all alumni and staff of Utrecht University, is housed in the Utrecht University Hall.

Objective

The aim is a functional building with an extended lifespan of at least 15 years. The current functionality will guide the building modifications. As the lifespan will be extended by at least 15 years, the technical installation will be completely renewed. In addition, some building optimisations will be made to improve overall operations.

In the context of sustainability,  BREEAM-NL In-Use level "Excellent" is the objective. To this end, the building will be optimally insulated, taking into account its monumental character and the air management will be brought up to standard. The project thus contributes to the programme goal of 'Realising efficient and sustainable accommodation' that supports the university's ambitions for the future.
