Redevelopment Hugo R. Kruyt Building
The Hugo R. Kruyt Building is located in the Utrecht Science Park and was built in the early 1970s. This young monument consists of four wings with a central core and has nine floors, making it a striking feature on the campus.
Need for redevelopment
The Hugo R. Kruyt Building has reached the end of its technical lifespan and needs to be renovated. In order to keep the building suitable for education and research in the future and to ensure that it meets current requirements in terms of sustainability, safety and user comfort, it will be redeveloped in the coming years. The exact planning and form of this redevelopment have not yet been determined. The decision-making authority lies with the Executive Board.
Suitability for research and future potential
Due to its structural properties, the Hugo R. Kruyt Building is highly suitable as a research building for the Faculty of Science. It is vibration-free, has high ceilings and spacious shafts for pipes and installations. These are important conditions for experimental research. The building is located in a prominent location in Utrecht Science Park and has the potential to become an iconic building that excels in sustainability, flexibility and appearance. Its listed status is an important consideration in the further development of the design.
Impact of works and temporary solutions
The redevelopment of the Hugo R. Kruyt Building is a major project. The remediation, demolition and construction work involved will cause disruption to the buildings immediately adjacent to it. A suitable solution has now been found to ensure the continuity of research in the surrounding Bloembergen and NPEC buildings. The Bloembergen building will have its own utilities and its own entrance so that it can continue to be used independently. Some of the NPEC's research will move to the Transition Building and some to the new greenhouse complex to be built in the Botanical Gardens of Utrecht University.
In 2028, the users of the Hugo R. Kruyt Building will move to two locations elsewhere on campus: the Transition Building and the SL2 Building at Sorbonnelaan 2.
