New Veterinary Medicine faculty building

Since 2021, the UU project team, consisting of staff from Campus & Facilities and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, has been working with great passion and motivation on the development of a new faculty building. Work is currently in progress to finalise the Programme of Requirements and preparations for the design phase have started with the tendering round for a design team.

Different locations together in the new building

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is located, spread over seven locations, in the eastern part of the Utrecht Science Park (USP). Because of their technical condition, poor sustainability performance and high housing costs, some of these locations will be divested. They will be replaced by a new building for education and research: the New Veterinary Medicine Building. This will house the research environment, the teaching environment, the office environment, the specials Anatomy and Pathology and all related support and central functions in the most optimal form and in relation to each other.

    New location

The new building will be located on the site of the current Martinus G. de Bruin building (MGB) and the adjacent car park. Together with the clinics on the other side of Yalelaan, the Jeannette Donker-Voet research building and the De Tolakker teaching farm, the new building will then form the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Within the UU, sustainability is central. We attach importance to the sustainability of today and of the future. Reusing materials from our existing Martinus G. de Bruin building (MGB) and from any other buildings is therefore an essential part of our task. Only through reuse can we respond to the Paris climate agreement. To make reuse possible in the future and to be able to easily respond to future adjustments of the building, detachability is also an essential part of our task.

The UU uses the concept of Steward Brand's six S-layers (the 'Layers of Brand') to gain insight into the degree of reuse and detachability. We want to avoid CO2 emissions as much as possible with reuse and detachability. In structural terms, we therefore focus on the parts that have the greatest impact, such as the structure (Structure) and the façade (Skin).

For the task of the new building, this means, among other things: further investigating whether the current basement, the foundation and other parts of the Martinus G. de Bruin building can be reused for the new building. Our dream is to use the MGB (and any other buildings in the area) as a donor building. The MGB is listed on building marketplace.

How nice is it if we can soon give the users of the new building a piece of history by, for example, showing construction parts of the old faculty building in their new place! We want a building that everyone is proud of, and not just the building but also the road leading up to it. We are therefore looking for parties who are as passionate as we are about the task.
