Mission and vision

The Campus & Facilities Department is part of Utrecht University. It is the place where, since 1636, new collaborations have begun and cross-fertilisation has taken place. With an open mind, an open attitude and open science, students, lecturers, researchers, staff and administrators work together to improve the world in a sustainable way. We do this in more than a hundred buildings in Utrecht’s historic city centre, at Utrecht Science Park and in the surrounding areas. Nestled in a unique, green setting, between the city and the region, and between tradition and innovation.

Vision – What we see around us at the university

The university is a comprehensive research university where teaching and research are closely intertwined. It has strong ties with the city and the region. The university boasts a diverse range of buildings and facilities, as well as a wide variety of amenities. The university explicitly provides scope for innovative teaching concepts, fosters individual development, encourages interaction and collaboration across boundaries, and encourages students to look outwards. We support the university in this by ensuring that its accommodation and campuses are designed to be healthy, functional, sustainable and future-proof.

Mission – How we aim to contribute to the university’s success

The management’s aim is to ensure that the university’s buildings and sites deliver maximum value for students and academics. Through the design of the sites, buildings and energy supply, we create an environment that stimulates learning, research and interaction. An environment that fosters the emergence of ideas and helps students and researchers to excel.

We explicitly consider our campuses, buildings and energy supply in relation to one another and with an eye to the future. We are working to ensure that our campuses and buildings are functional, healthy, circular, energy-generating, climate-resilient and accessible to all. We aim to set an inspiring example for our immediate community when it comes to sustainability.

We use the available resources – time, money and space – efficiently and effectively, because research and education take precedence in everything we do at the university.

With our expertise, we shape the university: the way we work and spend time here, the appearance of the buildings and sites, and the university’s reputation. In this way, we give students and researchers the space to carry out work that benefits society.
