Educational Research Training Programme

for university teachers

Utrecht University encourages educational scholarship to enlarge the knowledge-base on academic teaching. Academics are stimulated to use a research-informed approach for their teaching: disciplinary knowledge, practical knowledge and scientific knowledge are combined to enhance student learning. This programme will provide the participants with an overview of themes and research methods in educational sciences and train them to conduct and publish a discipline-related educational research project.

What does the programme bring?

After successful completion of the programme the participant:

  • is able to read and interpret educational sciences literature;
  • has knowledge and understanding of research designs and methods in educational sciences, including ethical issues;
  • is able to design, conduct, and publish a discipline-oriented educational research project in higher education;
  • is able to disseminate results of an educational research project.

Time investment

Approximately one day a week for two years. The programme consists of 12 meetings (17.00-20.00h) where relevant themes are addressed by discussing key publications in that specific area. During the programme participants will conduct a discipline-related educational research project and will be monthly individually mentored by senior educational researchers in order to publish the results in an international journal.

The price of this programme is €14,000. The Executive Board of Utrecht University will finance half of the fee. The other half is for the account of the participant, or his or her Department/Faculty (€3,500 per participant per year, €7,000 in total).
