With over 300 academic publications to his name, Professor Sierd Cloetingh (born 1950) numbers among the world leaders in the field of tectonics. In his career as a professor he has supervised over 70 PhD candidates. He is an Academy Professor and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Recently appointed to the position of vice president of the European Research Council (ERC) and president of the Academia Europaea (the European KNAW), Cloetingh plays a key role in the international academic world.
Cloetingh is editor-in-chief of the international scientific journal Global and Planetary Change and was one of the initiators of TOPO-EUROPE, a European geoscientific programme with 23 participating countries and 60 young researchers, PhDs and postdocs.
Cloetingh's academic achievements have earned him five international honorary doctorates and several decorations, including the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre national de la Légion d’Honneur in 2005 and the Dutch Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw in 2014.
