Responsible Conduct of Research - Year 3 - ONLINE (2023-I)

This course is the third part out of a series of four, which is introduced as compulsory training for PhDs at Utrecht University. You can find more information about the full training here.
Course description
Being a scientist is complicated. You have to deal with responsibilities towards your colleagues, your profession, science in general and society. On top of that, you have to perform state of the art research providing thrilling results and new insights for the life sciences.
This course aims to teach you how and why supervision, mentoring and collaboration are key ingredients to support Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). You will develop insights that can help you on your route to becoming a responsible researcher by completing an E-module. Next, you will engage in meaningful discussions with an international group of PhD candidates during the (online) plenary meeting at the end of this course.
This course is about Responsible research through supervision, mentoring and working together. We will focus on these 4 themes:
1) Expectations and responsibilities in supervision and mentoring – styles of supervision and mentoring, power relations and RCR, mutual expectations.
2) Culture, colleagues and communication – communication on RCR in your research practice.
3) Collaboration outside the research team – conflicts of interest, competing responsibility, IP.
4) Learning to take responsibilities and its boundaries – conversation with your supervisor/mentor.
Learning objectives
You will be introduced to key challenges that you could face when collaborating with others during your PhD research. Furthermore, you will learn how to deal with expectations and responsibility in supervision and mentoring.
Instructional method
You will first complete the E-module “Responsible research through supervision, mentoring and working together” via the ULearning portal. Next, you will participate in an one-hour online plenary session in which you discuss several tasks performed in the E-module guided by the trainer.
Trainer
Marcel van der Heyden is associate professor in the department of Medical Physiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht. Currently, his research focus is on cardiac potassium ion channel pharmacology and ion channel trafficking related to cardiac arrhythmia. Marcel teaches and writes on scientific integrity and is member of several advisory panels on this subject. He is associate editor on four peer review physiology journals. Marcel is a passionate teacher of physiology, scientific publishing and research integrity.

Course schedule
You will first complete the E-module “Responsible research through supervision, mentoring and working together” via the ULearning portal. The organizer (department of Medical Physiology) will contact you about the ULearning platform. You have 3 weeks to complete the E-module (~4 hours of work). You have to complete the E-learning before the online plenary session.

Course certificate
You will receive a course certificate after actively participating the E-Learning and the online plenary session.
Cancellation and No-show policy
This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates. However: free of charge does not mean free of responsibility. Once you have signed up for a course, we expect you to attend. For every late cancellation or no-show we have had to disappoint others who would have liked to attend. This is our policy:
- You may cancel free of charge up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. After this date you can only cancel if you have a GSLS PhD candidate to replace you in the course. Send the name and contact information of your replacement to pcc@uu.nl, at least 2 working days before the start of the course;
- We expect that you actively attend the full course. It is mandatory to complete the E-module and to attend the plenary session;
- Not meeting the above requirements means you will be charged a no-show fee (€ 50). We will send the invoice after the course has ended. We are unable to make any exceptions, unless you have a valid reason (i.e., illness or death in the family 1st/2nd degree or partner). Your supervisor has to send an e-mail to pcc@uu.nl indicating the reason.
Unfortunately we don’t offer this course for participants not part of the GSLS. Our courses tend to be fully booked by GSLS PhD candidates.
